To effectively preach the gospel you will at some time or another need to speak the language. If you are a short-term missionary this is not possible so you will need to find yourself a translator. When working with a translator the following are some thoughts to consider.
Where do you find a translator?
There is no directory for finding Christian translators so the best place to start is with the local church or a contact that you are working with. They will be able to find a translator to suit your need. Speak to the Nepali pastors or with your contact to organize a translator.
Get to know your translator
Allow time to meet the translator before your event or speaking. Have tea with them, share a meal, hear their story and pray with them so as to unify and allow time for your translator to understand your intention, accent and pace. The more time you invest in this the better your translator will be able understand you and the better you will understand how to speak.
Other hints
- Share your notes with your translator so they understand the basics of your topic.
- Try to remove ‘Christian’ jargon from your speeches.
- Prayerfully consider a financial gift that is relevant to the culture.
- Work on the equation of half – e.g. 20 minutes is 40 minutes with translation.
